Bake Some Memories at the First Lady's Pie Contest at the State Fair

Entry deadline extended to Aug. 12

With less than two weeks before the opening of the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia, amateur bakers across Missouri are digging up their favorite recipes for the First Lady's Pie Contest, Aug. 19, hosted by Missouri's First Lady Georganne Nixon. The contest deadline has been extended to Aug. 12 giving bakers even more time to gather their favorite recipes and gear up for the competition.

"One of my fondest memories is the smell of a hot apple pie coming from my mother's kitchen. If you have a family favorite or a winning recipe, we encourage you to join the friendly competition," said First Lady Georganne Nixon. "We hope this pie contest will help others make or relive some memories of their own at this year's State Fair."

The First Lady's Pie Contest is open to all amateur bakers and will be held Thurs., Aug. 19 at the Home Economics Building on the Missouri State Fairgrounds. All amateur bakers can enter by simply submitting their recipe and official Missouri State Fair entry form no later than Aug. 12. Pies in two categories, soft pies (custard/cream) and fruit pies, will be awarded cash prizes of up to $150. The Best of Show will receive $150.

The First Lady's Pie Contest is being sponsored by AgriMissouri, a program of the Missouri Department of Agriculture, and Starline Brass of Sedalia.
