When you travel by taxi, you might be surprised to know someone tests those meters to make sure you’re charged correctly for the ride. The Missouri Division of Weights, Measures and Consumer Protection ensures the accuracy of taximeters used to determine taxi fares. The division follows the procedures developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology contained in the NIST Handbook 44 Specifications, Tolerances, and Other Technical Requirements for Weighing and Measuring Devices. A copy of the NIST Handbook 44 can be obtained from the U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, DC 20402, telephone (202) 783-3238. There is a fee for this publication.
