Diagnostic Laboratories

Who We Are and What We Do

Find MDA milk testing guidance here regarding the evolving HPAI in dairy situation.

The Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratories are operated under the direction of the state veterinarian. The laboratories were established to help the division identify, control and eradicate those livestock diseases that threaten the profitability, marketability, and movement of Missouri's livestock and poultry products. In January 1994, the division was granted the authority to charge fees for a variety of other diagnostic services. The fees were established to help offset the cost of maintaining the laboratories and to upgrade equipment so that new and advanced tests can be run. The Springfield laboratory is part of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) which allows Missouri to fully support producers in the early detection and response to foreign animal diseases.

Submission Information

Please assist the laboratory staff in reducing the potential of delays or laboratory errors by clearly labelling and organizing all sample submissions. When manually filling out submission forms or labelling samples, please write clearly. Any samples that arrive mislabeled, unlabeled, or that have labels that are hard to read may increase the risk of error at the laboratory or may be rejected.

Submission Form Guidelines

Jefferson City Lab Sample Submission Form
Springfield Lab Sample Submission Form
Springfield Lab Food Analysis Request Form
  • Complete all fields on the submission form. Do not abbreviate names of veterinarians, veterinary clinics, or owners.
  • Indicate which tests are to be performed by filling in the appropriate boxes in the “Test Requested" section.
  • Complete all information pertaining to the animal being tested (species, breed, gender, age, and animal name or ID).
  • Test charts and samples improperly completed or labeled may be returned to the veterinarian for correction.

Sample Collection

  • Use appropriate, sterile containers for sample collection.
    • Please contact the laboratory with any questions pertaining to appropriate sample containers.
  • Practice aseptic technique when collecting all samples to prevent contamination that may interfere with test results.

Sample Labelling

  • Clearly identify all samples by handwriting or by placing a label on each sample that includes the animal's name, ID or tag number, as well as the owner's information and submitting veterinarian's information.
    • When handwriting information, use a pen or permanent marker, so that the information does not fade or rub off.

Sample Packaging

  • Package sample submission forms in a separate leak proof bag in case of leakage or damage to sample.
  • Ensure that all sample containers are sealed tightly so that they do not leak or become contaminated during transport.
  • Place absorbent material that will absorb the entirety of the sample container's contents with the samples.
  • Place cold packs around samples that must maintain a colder temperature for testing, such as milk, blood, or tissue samples.
  • Place padding, such as foam or bubble wrap, around samples to prevent damage during transit.
  • Ensure that the outer packaging is properly sealed and addressed correctly before shipment.

Laboratory Fees: (Are Not Refundable)

The Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratories offer a variety of serology and poultry testing. In addition, the Springfield laboratory offers microbiology, pathology, and molecular diagnostic testing.
