Rock Solid Urban Impact and Lykins Neighborhood Farm Receive $5000 Grant

Funds will support urban farm in Kansas City

Missouri Director of Agriculture Dr. Jon Hagler today awarded Rock Solid Urban Impact of Kansas City a $5,000 grant to continue their work to develop the Lykins Neighborhood Farm in Kansas City, Mo. The grant will support the construction of a market stand and grape arbor, a frost-free hydrant and a rain catchment system for the urban farming operation.

"Through the Local Foods Grant program, we are able to connect local organizations and individuals with the resources they need to make a difference for their communities," said Dr. Hagler. "These funds will help Rock Solid Urban Impact promote agriculture through their urban farm, growing fresh produce and developing connections among families within the neighborhood."

The group, led by Kansas City resident Jason Fields, plans to expand their 25 raised beds, 50' x 50' tilled garden and herb/strawberry plots by providing a water source on the property. The water system, grape arbor and market stand projects are expected to be completed by May 2012 and used during this year's growing season.

Rock Solid Urban Impact expects to double their fresh produce production and create a market stand that will provide access to fresh fruits and vegetables within the community following the completion of the projects. With this expansion, the group expects to reach as many as 4,600 residents in the urban Lykins Neighborhood in northeastern Kansas City.

This is the first year for the Local Foods Grants, which are supported by Missouri's Agriculture Protection Fund. The grant funds may be used for the creation of a farmers' market, the expansion of an urban or community garden, to promote local food efforts and/or youth initiatives that combat hunger, poor nutrition and obesity in collaboration with community gardens or farmers' markets.
